When restaurant chefs were asked about the menu items that they considered to be the biggest rip-offs, they thought up plenty of examples of foods that were sold for far more than they were worth. Sourcing ingredients from substandard suppliers and often using a minimum of effort in the kitchen, these meals and sides are in stark contrast to the high-ticket items.
While it may be true that something doesn't have to be expensive and carefully sourced to taste good, it doesn't feel great to know that you're being overcharged for some component of your dinner. Perhaps it is best to swerve these items during your next restaurant trip. Or order them regardless! So long as you enjoy it, everybody involved comes out of the situation happy.
